PhD Pepsi Scholarship Student Environmental Chemistry – GlazioPOP project

Pepsi Scholarship Melting Alpine glaciers represent a secondary source of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that were previously deposited to and incorporated into glaciers and are now released back to the environment due to the accelerated melting induced by climate warming. Therefore, the project GlazioPOP has been launched and is partly founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.Pepsi Scholarship In this interdisciplinary project, including the fields of glaciology, analytical chemistry, sedimentology, and environmental fate modeling, the complete chain of processes affecting POPs in temperate Alpine glaciers will be investigated. GlazioPOP includes three closely linked work packages, each representing the topic of a doctoral thesis. In the first work package, POPs are measured in Alpine glaciers; in the second package, the flow of ice and the mass balance of glaciers are determined. The Pepsi Scholarship current open position consists of the third thesis, where data from the two other work packages are integrated to provide a comprehensive picture of the transport of POPs in glacier ice, including deposition on, incorporation into, transport within, and release from glaciers. The Pepsi Scholarship various components of the entire system will be integrated in a multicompartmental fate model. The model will be developed for ecosystems of temperate glaciers, based on Visual Basic, Matlab, or similar programming tools.

This position requires a highly motivated scientist interested in challenging work, keen to develop computer models, efficient in interacting with different research teams, and enthusiastic about the high Alpine environment. The successful candidate holds a master degree in chemistry, environmental or natural sciences with an excellent academic record. Fluency in English is mandatory and good knowledge of German is an additional asset. Ideally, the work begins in spring 2011.

Job description
This work will be performed within the research group ‘Wide band gap Materials’ of the Institute for Materials Research, University of Hasselt, in the framework of the project BOF – New initiative with a title ‘Nanodiamond particle spin magnetometer en FRET sensors: novel routes towards molecular resolution neuro-network imaging’. The project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Antwerp and international partners.
The candidate will focus his research on the development of novel nanoscopic optical sensing methods using luminescent diamond nanoparticles for contactless readout and communication with neural cells. Emphasis will be put on the physics and manipulation with nanoscale materials, their optical characterization and development of sensing methods with molecular resolution in physiological media. The topic is related to latest developments in neuroscience where optical detection is being used as a contactless tool for monitoring of signals in neural networks such as in the mammalian brain. The biological aspect of this work will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Antwerp and applied to neural cells in vitro and in vivo, leading to novel highly sensitive neural detection probes. The candidate has access to state-of-the-art techniques and will work within a stimulating and multidisciplinary environment.

Profile and diploma
Master degree (or equivalent) in physics, biomedical sciences, materials science, nanotechnology, electronic engineering, or physical chemistry. A background in the field of optical detection method, solid state physics or bioelectronics will be considered a plus.

The International Doctoral Program in Economics is a three-year program designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire the research and analytical skills of the international scientific community in economics. Pepsi Scholarship Sunlight can influence the breakdown of medicines in the body

PRESS RELEASE, 9 March 2011] A study from Karolinska Institutet has shown that the body’s ability to break down medicines may be closely related to exposure to sunlight, and thus may vary with the seasons. The findings offer a completely new model to explain individual differences in the effects of drugs, and how the surroundings can influence the body’s ability to deal with toxins.

The study will be published in the scientific journal Drug Metabolism & Disposition and is based on nearly 70,000 analyses from patients who have undergone regular monitoring of the levels of drugs in their blood. The drugs taken by these patients are used to suppress the immune system in association with organ transplants. Samples taken during the winter months were compared with those taken late in the summer.

A more detailed analysis showed that the concentrations of drugs such as tacrolimus and sirolimus, which are used to prevent rejection following transplantation, vary throughout the year in a manner that closely reflects changes in the level of vitamin D in the body. The ability of the body to form vitamin D depends on sunlight, and the highest levels in the patients taking part in the study were reached during that part of the year when the levels of the drugs were lowest.

The connection between sunlight, vitamin D and variations in drug concentration is believed to arise from the activation by vitamin D of the detoxification system of the liver by increasing the amount of an enzyme known as CYP3A4. This enzyme, in turn, is responsible for the breakdown of tacrolimus and sirolimus.

"If the breakdown capacity increases, then higher doses of a drug are normally required in order to achieve the same effect", says Jonatan Lindh at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and one of the scientists who carried out the study. "More research will be needed to confirm the results, but CYP3A4 is considered to be the most important enzyme in drug turnover in the body, and the results may have significance for many drugs"

The effects of vitamin D on CYP3A4 have previously been demonstrated in experiments in cell cultures. But the study now to be published shows for the first time that the mechanism can play an important role in the pharmacological treatment of patients, and it shows for the first time that variation in exposure to sunlight may affect the sensitivity of individuals to drugs.

Scope and Structure of the Programme

The programme covers a broad range of managerial topics and gradually deepens the students' knowledge of these. Nota: Serán elegibles aquellos candidatos que cumplan los requisitos de ingreso en algún centro universitario japonés. Como regla general, no podrá solicitar la beca aquella persona que haya realizado cursos de doctorado a no ser que desee obtener un título.

Áreas de estudio: Los solicitantes podrán solicitar la beca únicamente para estudios relacionados con su especialidad y llevarlos a cabo en la universidad de su elección.
Idioma japonés: Los solicitantes deberán mostrar su interés en aprender el idioma japonés, su interés por Japón y en profundizar sus conocimientos sobre Japón en general después de su llegada, así como comprometerse en su investigación y estudio a la vez que en adaptarse a su vida en Japón.

Salud: Los solicitantes deberán gozar de un buen estado de salud física y mental para llevar a cabo sus estudios.

Llegada a Japón: Los solicitantes deberán llegar a Japón entre el 1 y el 7 de abril de 2011, o en la fecha establecida por la universidad anfitriona para iniciar el semestre (en principio, septiembre u octubre). Los gastos de viaje no serán cubiertos fuera de las fechas establecidas.

Visado: Los solicitantes deberán tramitar un visado de estudiante (College Student - ryuugaku) antes de su llegada a Japón. Cuando el candidato seleccionado resida ya en Japón con un estatus distinto al del visado de estudiante, deberá tramitar éste hasta finales del mes previsto para comenzar el disfrute de la beca. Aquellos que cambien su estatus después de su llegada a Japón con otro visado que no sea el de estudiante, no podrán ser beneficiarios de la beca del Gobierno de Japón.
Quedarán excluidas las siguientes candidaturas. Si son detectadas después del inicio de la beca, el solicitante deberá renunciar a la misma:
1) Miembros o funcionarios en activo de las Fuerzas Armadas.

2) Aquellos solicitantes que no puedan viajar a Japón en la fecha prevista para su incorporación.

3) Los solicitantes que hayan disfrutado anteriormente de una beca del Gobierno japonés (Mº de Educación) a menos que hayan ejercido en investigación o docencia durante al menos 3 o más años después de haber regresado a su país de origen. Esta exclusión no se aplica a estudiantes investigadores que (i) hayan gozado de la beca de Estudios Japoneses del MEXT y que se hayan graduado en universidades de su país de origen, o que (ii) hayan sido estudiantes internacionales en Japón con el programa conjunto de becas de los gobiernos japonés y coreano para estudiantes en departamentos de ciencias e ingenierías.

4) Los solicitantes que estén matriculados actualmente en alguna universidad japonesa con visado de estudiante o planeen hacerlo de forma privada en el momento de iniciarse esta beca.

5) Solicitantes que ya estén disfrutando de becas o ayudas de algún otro organismo (incluyendo instituciones oficiales de su país de origen).

6) Solicitantes seleccionados no licenciados que no consigan su título universitario en el periodo previsto.

3. PERIODO DE DISFRUTE DE LAS BECAS:

(1) El periodo de disfrute de la beca variará, como se detalla a continuación, dependiendo del curso que el becario realice en Japón:

Si el becario llega a Japón en abril de 2011, la beca tendrá una duración de 24 meses, desde abril de 2011 hasta marzo de 2013.
Si el becario llega a Japón en octubre de 2011, la beca tendrá una duración de 18 meses, desde octubre de 2011 hasta marzo de 2013.
(En ambos casos, se incluye un periodo de 6 meses de aprendizaje del japonés para los becarios que lo necesiten).

(2) Si el becario se inscribiera en cursos de master, doctorado o de especialización profesional después de su llegada a Japón, la beca seguiría vigente durante el tiempo necesario para completarlos (además de los 6 meses de japonés para aquellos becarios que lo necesiten).

4. DOTACIÓN:

Asignación:

Según los presupuestos de 2010, cada becario percibirá mensualmente 152.000 yenes (para Research Students), 154.000 yenes (para estudiantes inscritos en cursos de master) o 155.000 yenes (para estudiantes inscritos en cursos de doctorado) (en determinadas regiones, podría aumentar la mensualidad en 2.000 o 3.000 yenes). Estas cantidades están sujetas a los cambios anuales de los presupuestos. La beca será suspendida en casos de abandono o ausencia prolongada de la universidad por parte del becario.

Costes de viaje:

Transporte a Japón: Billete de avión en clase económica, según el itinerario fijado por el MEXT, desde el aeropuerto internacional más cercano a su residencia* hasta el Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de Tokio (o al aeropuerto internacional más cercano a la universidad de destino). No se incluyen los gastos de traslado desde su domicilio hasta el aeropuerto más cercano, tasas de aeropuerto y tasas especiales que deberán ser cubiertos por los becarios. (* Residencia se refiere a la que el candidato haya indicado en los formularios de solicitud). No serán cubiertos los gastos de viaje desde un país distinto al del solicitante ni el viaje con anterioridad al 1 de abril de 2011. No serán cubiertos los gastos del candidato que viaje a Japón para obtener la admisión de alguna universidad.

Transporte desde Japón: El becario que regrese en el periodo previsto después de finalizar su periodo de estudios, dispondrá, previa solicitud, de un billete de avión en clase económica desde el Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de Tokio (o al aeropuerto internacional más cercano a la universidad hasta el aeropuerto más cercano a su residencia). Nota: El seguro de viaje y accidente, hacia o desde Japón, será cubierto por el becario. Además, el aeropuerto de partida y de regreso deberá ser del país de origen del becario.

Tasas académicas: El gobierno de Japón cubrirá los gastos de matriculación, clases y examen de ingreso en la universidad. Si el becario accede a grados superiores o a enseñanza no reglada, éste pagará su examen de ingreso.

MEXT Scholarship for Study in Japan 2011 is now open for Cambodian Students

The Government of Japan (MEXT: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) offers scholarships to Cambodian students who wish to study in Japan.

1. Category

There are 4 categories, as follows:

1)Research students

You must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years of schooling.

2)Undergraduate university students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates).

3)College of technology students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates).

4)Professional training college students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates).

As a student, researcher or scholar you should apply to a specific EU programme in the field of Higher Education which could ultimately lead to the award of a grant if your application is successful.

* One of the selected consortia of universities that delivers an Erasmus Mundus course (Masters or Doctorate) in the framework of the Action 1 of the programme.

You will find below further useful information concerning the Erasmus Mundus scholarships available through the different Actions of the programme.
1. Erasmus Mundus Action 1 – Masters Courses and Joint Doctorates

Erasmus Mundus Action 1 offers full-time scholarships for Masters programmes and Doctorate programmes to students coming from any country around the world. These scholarships are exclusively awarded to students that have been selected to attend one of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes at Masters or Doctorate level. Furthermore, the programme offers fellowships to scholars who wish to undertake research assignments or scholarly work in one of the selected Erasmus Mundus Programmes.

In order to benefit from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship/fellowship students and/or scholars should:

* identify the Erasmus Mundus Joint Programme of their interest
* present their application to the relevant Consortium of Universities that delivers the Erasmus Mundus course. Applications are usually requested by consortia between the October and December of the year previous to the academic year they wish to start their studies/research.

Applications for scholarships

Should you wish to apply for the academic year 2010/2011 you are advised to consult in advance the web sites of each of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes that interest you. There you will find all necessary information concerning the content of the course, its structure, the scholarship amounts as well as the application and selection procedures.

Please note that each Erasmus Mundus Joint Programme defines its own selection criteria, admission procedures and deadlines.

The amount of scholarship awarded varies depending on whether the student has carried out their main activities (studies, work etc) for more than 12 months in Europe over the last 5 years or not. The programme offers full-time scholarships and/or fellowships that cover the living costs, tuition fees, travelling and insurance costs of the students.

You will find further information on the Action 1 of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Programmes in the updated version of the "frequently asked questions" (FAQs).

2. Erasmus Mundus Action 2 – Erasmus Mundus Partnerships (former External Cooperation Window – EMECW)

The Erasmus Mundus Action 2 was launched in 2006 under the name “External Cooperation Window". It offers a cooperation, development and mobility scheme in the field of higher education between European and a great variety of non European countries and regions around the world. This Action provides EU funds partnerships of EU and non-EU higher education institutions with the purpose of organising mobility of students, researchers and academic staff. The non-EU countries covered by the programme are grouped together into regional or national lots.

A call for proposals is published on a yearly basis. Each call selects new partnerships of higher education institutions that will be funded to organise mobility flows between Europe and the countries included in the respective geographical lot. Selected partnerships are responsible for awarding individual grants and scholarships. The partnership will define its own criteria and procedures for selecting students, professors, scholars etc, who will benefit from mobility grants between the countries covered by the partnership.

In June of each year, the Agency publishes on its website a list of the partnerships selected in the Call, as well as the countries covered, and the universities making up the various partnerships.

Applications for mobility

Students, researchers and academics from EU and non-EU partner countries interested in benefiting from a scholarship are invited to submit their applications directly to a selected partnership. Please remember that you can only apply to the lot where your country is included.

If your nationality does not correspond with the countries mentioned you can still contact the selected partnership to find out how to participate.

All mobility under Erasmus Mundus Action 2 shares the following characteristics:

* Mobility covers a range of individual beneficiaries: students at undergraduate, masters, doctorate and post-doctorate level, academic and administrative staff and professionals from universities from the non-European countries covered by the respective geographic lot.
* It covers a wide range of academic disciplines, though these will vary according to the priorities set for each of the geographic lots.
* Mobility can last from a minimum of one month for professors and six months (one semester) for students, to a maximum of 34 months for doctoral students.
* To benefit from a grant, European students and teachers must be registered at one of the European universities in the partnership.
* Students, professors or professionals from outside Europe must be nationals of one of the countries covered by the respective geographic lot. They do not necessarily need to belong to one of the consortium universities.
* The various geographic lots favour the award of grants to nationals of the non-European countries who are disadvantaged or who find themselves in a "particularlty vulnerable situation". Please see the annual call for proposals for more on this definition.
* Grants cover the entirety of the cost of travel and accommodation at the host university, including the living costs and costs related to matriculation and insurance.

Please note that eligibility criteria for grants and scholarships may vary from one geographic lot to another.
3. Insurance arrangements for students and academics

Students selected for scholarships under Action 1 of the Erasmus Mundus Programme in the selection years up to and including 2009 are covered by a centralised insurance scheme.

Students and doctoral candidates selected from 2010 onwards will be covered by an insurance scheme organised by the consortium or partnership itself. The Agency has set a number of minimum requirements for the insurance coverage offered by Action 1 consortia and Action 2 partnerships.
4. Multiple applications

Under Action 1, a student may apply to a maximum of 3 different Masters Courses and/or Joint Doctorates per selection year.

Under Action 2 (former ECW) there is no limit on the number of applications by an individual per selection year. Under Action 2, you can apply to as many projects as you are qualified for. However, if you have already benefited from one mobility activity within one selection year, you are no longer eligible for mobility within that project during that selection year. Please also note that usually in the application it is requested to specify if you have applied to more than one programme. Of course, if selected, you can participate only in one exchange, as you can receive only one grant.
5. Repeated scholarships

Under Action 1, a selected student may not benefit from a second scholarship to follow the same or another Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in the future. He/she may apply and be selected to take part in an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate.

Under Action 2, a selected student/academic may not benefit from a future second scholarship in the same partnership, or for a scholarship at the same level of study (undergraduate, master, doctorate...) from a different partnership.

Two PhD students in the area of Innovative steel structures at the Div of Structural Engineering-Steel Structures.

Steel Structure research group deals with research projects in the area of steel and composite steel-concrete structures. Stability of steel structures at room and elevated temperatures, bridges, connections, Finite Element modelling are areas where previous PhD theses were made. Almost all of our projects have been partially internationally financed. Development of new concepts for steel towers for wind turbines and structural joints exposed to fire are examples where two PhD may work. Both projects are financed by EU and national resources.

Our main objective is to develop sustainable constructions by structural innovation. PhD students have big opportunities to self define a way to deal with everyday tasks. They will gain experience in international project management in addition to the research studies. The research study consists of courses at postgraduate level, experimental work in Complab laboratory and numerical work. As a researcher you will work to prepare design recommendations for structural engineers based on Eurocodes. You will be involved in graduate studies in the area of structural engineering.

Your education has to be at level of Master of Science in Structural engineering. In a case of equal qualifications we will give priority to female candidates and candidates with international experience. We have experience of accommodating foreign students and will help you with accommodation in Luleå.
